Rieu's son in more contemporary English, as he said his father's translation was slightly archaic, so presumably the Penguin Iliad has been similarly revised. Plus I love the Greek and Roman gods. If you've never read the Iliad, it truly is one of the greatest works of literature. So I am reading the Odyssey right now, in the Fagles translation, which I have to say appears to be the best translation in all the land. I have taught both The Odyssey and The Iliad, and I agree with you about Agamemnon. Odysseus is pretty bad-ass, but my favorite character in The Iliad is Hector. My edition of Penguin Classics Odyssey was revised by E.V. It is what fired my imagination for swords and sorcery books and Dungeons and Dragons. They form I recently came across the Robert Fagles translation and it strikes a good balance between the original poetic form and being understandable. But if Fagles' long-awaited version sells like his editions of The Iliad and The Odyssey, it will eventually be known to hundreds of thousands of readers, by choice and by assignment. If you don't know, Homer's The Odyssey is a direct sequel and Virgil's Aenied tells another part of the story after The Iliad ends.
